Maui Yesterday … ‘Īao Valley, where the legendary exploits of the Demi-god Maui – Maui-the-trickster as he was called – are shared and revealed. With his great fishhook he pulled up the islands from the ocean depths. He snared the sun, and made it promise to move slowly across the sky. Maui gave man the ability to harness fire. In 1790 ‘Īao Valley was the battleground where the warrior chief Kamehameha conquered Maui’s brave defenders. ‘Īao Valley is also a place of incredible scenery and lush tropical foliage. Stunningly beautiful flowers complement the 2,250-foot high lava pinnacle called the ‘Īao Needle.
Maui Today … Maui Ocean Center is a five-acre state-of-the-art aquarium and marine park centrally located at Mā‘alaea. Superb indoor exhibits and outdoor pools allow visitors an extraordinary look at the vast undersea world surrounding the islands. All marine life in the facility are indigenous – found only in the Hawaiian islands – or endemic – found throughout the Pacific region.
In the Underwater Journey you’ll walk through a clear acrylic tunnel surrounded by a 750,000-gallon aquarium that is home to both predators and prey in natures’ constant ebb and flow of survival. The Whale Discovery Center chronicles the humpback whales annual journey between Alaska and Maui, with life-size models of these gentle giants.
Lunch will be at the Seascape Mā‘alaea Restaurant, a delightful open-air restaurant with expansive views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean.
